Title: Navigating New Frontiers with AI-Enhanced Electron Microscopy

Abstract

In this talk, we delve into the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the field of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Novel interoperable arrangements are ushering in a new generation of instrumentation, allowing for the integration of various external stimuli directly into the microscope environment. The utilization of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology facilitates the integration of custom optics and small devices, enabling unprecedented in situ and in operando experiments. These experiments, often characterized by extended durations and requiring precision and speed beyond human capacity, pose significant challenges in both data acquisition and processing. The advent of AI emerges as a natural solution to address these issues. Neural networks (NN), with their capacity for complex pattern recognition, predictive modeling, and real-time analysis, become indispensable tools in navigating the intricacies of TEM experiments. Neural networks, in fact, stand out in tasks demanding precision and speed, outpacing human capabilities and significantly elevating the efficiency of intricate experiments. Furthermore, their adaptability to dynamic experimental conditions allows for real-time adjustments and optimizations throughout the data collection process. When considering prolonged experiments, AI’s role in automation also proves crucial, alleviating the burden on human operators and ensuring unparalleled consistency and reliability. On the other hand, the substantial volume of data generated during these experiments finds efficient processing through NNs, yielding meaningful insights and expediting the pace of discovery. Furthermore, the proficiency of NNs in recognizing complex patterns within datasets aids in identifying subtle changes or phenomena in the intricate landscape of TEM experiments. As we showcase the current applications of AI in TEM, we envision a future where human expertise and artificial intelligence seamlessly collaborate, pushing the boundaries of discovery in the microscopic realm. This synergistic partnership holds the promise of unlocking new frontiers in scientific exploration and innovation.
